On Tuesday night at Denver's Filmore Auditorium, AMPP held its annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony to honor its 2023 scholarship and award winners. Recipients were chosen by selection committees based on their academic excellence, work experience, professional activities, and commitment to the corrosion industry. The ceremony was followed by the EMERGing Leaders Bash.
Robotics Offer Numerous Advantages in CUI Inspections
Robotics can be used as a nondestructive method to find corrosion under insulation (CUI), as explained by Chase David (Gecko Robotics) in an AMPPiTheater presentation at the 2023 AMPP Annual Conference + Expo. CUI occurs when moisture is trapped behind insulation, corroding the metal underneath.
Investigators Share Advice and Processes on Coating Failures
Valerie Sherbondy and Rick Huntley of KTA-Tator, Inc. reviewed the process of how coating failures should be investigated. As part of their session, they stressed the importance of not coming to a conclusion before all details are gathered and results interpreted.

Titled "Identifying New Government Contract Opportunities, Making an Impact on Your Business through the Use of KPIs, and Evaluating Why Team Players Cheat," the session consisted of five different presentations.

The final day of the 2023 AMPP Annual Conference + Expo includes topics such as high-temperature materials and corrosion; machine learning for corrosion management; and new organic coating technologies for reduced environmental impact and enhanced protection.
While time and money are always lost when faced with a premature coatings or linings failure, the biggest loss is often that of reputation. Mike O’Brien of MARK 10 Research Group, Inc., made that clear during one of this week’s AMPP forums. “The common denominator in all premature coating failures is people,” he says.
