EPA Announces New Lead Pipe Rule and Funding Boost

On October 8, the Biden-Harris Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finalized a new rule requiring all U.S. drinking water systems to identify and replace lead service lines within 10 years. This rule strengthens protections against lead exposure by lowering the lead action level to 10 µg/L, accelerating corrosion control efforts, and expanding education requirements, especially for schools and childcare facilities.

In addition to the new rule, the EPA announced $2.6 billion in infrastructure funding through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to help water systems upgrade. This funding is part of a broader $11.7 billion package to improve water safety and lead pipe removal across the country.

These efforts focus on reducing health risks in vulnerable communities and improving the nation’s water infrastructure in the long term.
